Determining Competitive Age: A gymnast’s competitive age throughout the entire competitive season is determined by the age he will be on May 31 of the current competitive season. For example, for all competitions this season, a gymnast’s competitive age is determined by his age as of May 31, 2017. A gymnast under the actual age of 6 may not compete.
Division 1 and 2 for Levels 5-7: Levels 5, 6, and 7 have compulsory routines, meaning each level has a required set of skills that must be done in competition. Each level also has bonus skills that will generate additional points if performed properly. There will now be two divisions in each Level, called division 1 and division 2. Coaches will decide in which division to register the Level 5, 6, and 7 gymnasts based on the gymnast’s ability.
The basic reasoning behind this split is to separate the gymnasts who are just starting to compete or who are just moving up a level and cannot perform the bonus skills from the gymnasts who are more experienced, stronger, and who can do the bonus skills. Divisions may be changed up to the entry deadline for States. Grouping the sessions for our locals and States will depend on the number of D1 and D2 gymnasts that we have registered. If the numbers work out, sessions will be scheduled with all Division 2 gymnasts (mixing levels), and sessions with all Division 1 gymnasts (mixing levels).
Junior Development and Junior Olympic divisions for Levels 8, 9, and 10: Levels 8, 9, and 10 will now have two divisions: Junior Development (JD) and Junior Olympic (JO). The JD level was added to give Levels 8, 9, and 10 gymnasts who are not ready to jump up to JO a chance to develop and still compete. It is also a good division for gymnasts who do not want to do all around. JD is easier than JO because there are no special event requirements, meaning there is not a set of required skills on each apparatus. The JO division will have specific required skills for each level, and gymnasts in the JO division will compete for all around medals.
If you have any questions about which division your son is in, ask your coach.
